An addition is the one project where the new work and the existing house have to agree structurally. The roof has to tie in so water leaves the valley instead of sitting in it, the new slab has to be poured to move with the old one rather than against it, and the finished floor heights have to meet without a step nobody wanted.
Central Oklahoma adds a wind requirement that milder parts of the country do not have. Framing, connections and roof tie ins get detailed for the loads this region actually sees, which is a design decision made before the first footing is dug and not something that can be added later.
Additions are also the projects most likely to need a permit and an inspection, so scope, drawings and the city the property sits in get settled at the start. Every municipality in the metro sets its own rules.
