Most flooring failures are subfloor failures. On a slab the two questions that decide whether a floor lasts are how flat it is and how much moisture is coming up through it, and both get checked before any material is ordered. Central Oklahoma slabs move with the clay underneath them, so a slab that was flat when the house was built often is not flat now.
Skipping the flatness check is what produces hollow spots under tile and plank that clicks underfoot within a year. Skipping the moisture check is what lifts glue down installations off a slab. Grinding the high spots and filling the low ones is unglamorous and it is the difference between a floor and a callback.
Material choice follows the room rather than the trend. Luxury vinyl plank belongs in a house with dogs, children and a back door that opens onto Oklahoma weather. Hardwood belongs where it will be looked after.
