Two details decide whether a deck survives out here, and neither is visible once the boards are down. The first is the ledger, the board that attaches the deck to the house. Attached badly or flashed badly, it either rots the rim joist behind it or lets the deck pull away from the wall. The second is the footings. Expansive clay lifts an undersized footing every wet season until the deck is no longer level with the door it serves.
Above ground, the design question is shade. An uncovered deck facing west in an Oklahoma July is unusable from two in the afternoon, which is why covered patios and pergolas make up much of what we build. Orientation gets decided before the framing plan.
Composite costs more at the start and stops the annual sanding and sealing that a wood deck needs in this climate. Wood is warmer underfoot and cheaper up front. Both are defensible and the choice is the owner's.
